Our Children’s Activities Manager, Margaret Connell, says in the last 3 years she’s really noticed that children are starting to walk at a later age. She often discusses children’s development with parents, and her feedback is that children who learn to walk in homes with wooden floors are likely to be discouraged from early attempts to walk by falling on a hard surface.
Another factor is the increased use of cars. Mothers tend to carry small children from their home to the car, rather than letting them try to walk.
Her advice is to let toddlers practice their walking on a soft surface like a carpet or secure rug, and to take the time to let them walk short distances rather than carrying them.
Classes like “Tinies Tumble” give little ones the chance to develop their confidence and challenge their physical ability in a fun and safe environment.
